Human Factors and Ergonomics Society

67th International Annual Meeting

October 23-27, 2023

ASPIRE, the HFES International Annual Meeting, is the premier educational activity organized by the Society. This year, the conference took place in Washington, D.C. The meeting typically hosts between 1,500 and 2,000 attendees from academia, government, and industry in the field of human factors and ergonomics, and features over 600 technical presentations.

SED Lab research assistant Rob (Hongbo) Chen was in attendance and presented his work on patient safety event report classification:

"Our research emphasizes the significance of text representation in the context of patient safety event (PSE) report classification. More specifically, we utilized contextual text representations from transformer-based language models to improve the accuracy of PSE report classification. Moreover, by incorporating an explainable artificial intelligence technique (XAI), the Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) technique, we’ve established an interface promoting transparency and collaboration between artificial intelligence and healthcare professionals."

Additionally, MASc student Nicole Hicks did a poster presentation, introducing her research on how she will be using patient journey mapping and a systems analysis to identify patient’s unmet needs, and barriers and facilitators to their care during pregnancy and postpartum to design more equitable maternal care.
