Soyun Oh
Research Assistant
Soyun is a MSc student in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. Before her master's program, she completed her two bachelor’s degrees at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and The Cyber University of Korea and worked in UX research/design for a year. Soyun is interested in the intersection of Healthcare, Human Factors, & Universal Design. She worked on the ‘interpreter Utilization Project’ at St. Michael Hospital to enhance care quality and health outcomes of patients with limited English proficiency. Her ultimate research goal was to serve an underserved population both in healthcare and Information Technology like older adults and patients with limited English proficiency.
Research Assistant
Tochi Oramasionwu graduated with his MEng in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto in November 2022. He received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Exeter in England in 2019. Tochi worked on a project to investigate CPR performance by examining resuscitation teams’ use of real-time feedback from a defibrillator, and understanding how these responses are shaped by characteristics of the work system.
LinQiao Zhang
Undergraduate Research Assistant
LinQiao is a third year Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, LinQiao’s research focused on the Retained Foreign Objects (RFO) Project, aiming to enhance patient safety through refining the Borealis database and assisting with systematic reviews on computer-aided detection of RFOs. Additionally, LinQiao supported the Patient Journey Mapping (PJM) Project, addressing latent threats in maternal care and identifying practices to enhance safety, equity, and patient-centred care.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Anna is an Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, & Design (SED) lab, Anna’s research focus was on investigating system safety and disparities in maternity healthcare through the examination of patient safety incident reports. She was involved in the analysis of remote patient monitoring programs with Women’s College Hospital, as well as investigating intervention techniques for the prevention of retained foreign objects during surgery.
Fiona Sun
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Fiona Sun is a 3rd year Industrial Engineering student at University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, Fiona’s research focused on developing and testing a visual feedback mechanism to monitor system equity in maternal health. She developed a prototype that visually represented the findings of the statistical and qualitative data analysis related with maternal health data, and carried out related usability testing.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Michelle Lai is an Industrial Engineering undergrad at the University of Toronto specializing in Human Factors, with a passion for user experience design. Within the SED Lab, Michelle’s research focus was on identifying and comparing extended reality (XR) tools that have the potential to enhance the quality of informed consent process in healthcare. Her findings were synthesized in a narrative review, and led to a pilot study.
Max Bao
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Max Bao is an Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, Max’s research focused on developing and testing a dashboard using historical maternal health data. She created a prototype in visualization tools, represented the findings of the statistical and qualitative data analysis, conducted usability testing and iterative refinement.
Halle Teh
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Halle Teh is a 2nd year Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity and Design (SED) lab, Halle's research concentrated on utilizing extended reality (AR/VR) to enhance the informed consent process in healthcare. This aims to allow patients to understand their treatment options, such as surgical procedures, better through immersive learning.
Layla Atallah
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Layla is a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, Layla’s research focused on data analysis in understanding experiences of pregnant and postpartum women in the healthcare system within the Maternal Health and Disparities project. Secondarily, Layla supported the Extended Reality project.

Andrea is an Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, & Design (SED) lab, Andrea’s research focus was on analyzing remote patient monitoring programs with Women’s College Hospital. She was involved in the operational project of analyzing workflows for the use of asynchronous messaging with patients.

Within the Safety, Equity, & Design (SED) lab, Ruoqing's (Russell) research focus was on investigating methodologies to mitigate and manage the risk of retained foreign objects (RFOs) in clinical surgeries with the aim to improve patient safety.
Joey Lu

Joey Lu is a 3rd year Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, Joey’s research focused on exploring the potential of extended reality (AR/VR) to enhance patient education and consent processes in healthcare. He helped the team find the best alternative tool and the most suitable VR headset for the research.

Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, Skye’s research focus was on exploring the various types of checklists for medical use and analyzing whether the checklists are suitable for practical use or not.

Alex is a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Toronto who worked on the CPR project with Professor Myrtede Alfred. His eventual goal is to become a researcher in the biomedical field, but he is also interested in Mechatronics and Robotics.

Jingjing (Isabel) Zhan
Research Assistant
Isabel graduated with her MEng in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto in December 2022. She received her BSc degree in computer sciences, statistics, and mathematics from the University of Toronto (2021). The purpose of her MEng project was to survey remote patient monitoring projects and evaluate their effectiveness in improving quality of care and increasing healthcare capacity and accessibility.
Izhaan Junaid
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Izhaan is a third year Industrial Engineering Student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity and Design (SED) Lab, Izhaan’s research focused on compiling healthcare checklists and literature on effective checklist designs, as well as refining an algorithm to assist healthcare teams in determining which checklists to utilize. He also assisted in the systematic review of literature regarding computer-aided detection of retained foreign objects, or RFOs, for the purpose of improving their overall detection rate.

Sam is a graduate of Emory University in the United States. He is passionate about leveraging human factors and system design to improve patient outcomes and support public health endeavors. Within the Safety, Equity, & Design (SED) lab, Sam supported work on maternal health outcomes through data compilation and analysis. At the same time, he provided guidance for undergraduate teams working on improving detection of RFOs and the incorporation of VR tools to aid in patient education and consent processes.

Sasha is an Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. She is passionate about human factors and engineering design. Within the Safety, Equity, & Design (SED) lab, her research focused on improving the accuracy of intraoperative radiology reads involving the detection of retained foreign objects (RFOs). She was involved in developing an open and accessible library of RFO radiographs and testing multiple priming processes to support intraoperative reads.
Bella Yang
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Bella Yang, a third-year Computer Engineering student specializing in Software Development and Artificial Intelligence, participated in a research term at the SED lab. As part of her research, Bella joined the team working on the application of Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) in medical settings. Her project involved developing an advanced and revolutionary process that utilizes AR/VR technology to enhance the patient consent process.
Zeina Shaltout
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Zeina Shaltout is a 3rd year Industrial Engineering student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, Zeina's research focused on exploring the potential of extended reality (AR/VR) to enhance patient education and consent processes in healthcare. She led a student project to develop a VR demo and study XR tools' efficacy, aiming to revolutionize patient understanding of surgical procedures.
Francesca Fortino
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Francesca is a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering Student at the University of Toronto, interested in the Biomedical Engineering field. Within the Safety, Equity and Design (SED) lab she worked on the CPR project to conduct testing and ultimately complete a pilot study to determine the efficacy of tactile feedback devices in improving Bystander CPR quality.
Yasmeen Smadi

Yasmeen is a third year Industrial Engineering Student at the University of Toronto. Within the Safety, Equity, and Design (SED) lab, Yasmeen’s research focus was on examining hospital command and control centers. She evaluated their effectiveness, the investment costs involved, and the range of operations monitored to help better support the design of these centers.
Ayouni Khan
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ayouni Khan is a 4th-year Molecular Genetics and Physiology student at the University of Toronto. Her research centered on the development of a proof-of-concept interface design that examines the viability of employing artificial intelligence to categorize patient safety events within reporting systems, with the aim to enhance risk management and optimize patient care.
Jasmine Zhan

Jasmine is a second year industrial engineering student who is interested in the intersection between healthcare and technology. Her research within the Safety, Equity and Design (SED) Lab focused on examining the effectiveness of checklist designs in different settings, and determining how healthcare workers can select the most practical design.

Andreas is an Engineering Science student at the University of Toronto interested in electrical and robotics engineering. Andreas investigated multimodal CPR feedback with the aim of designing and testing a CPR device with tactile feedback. He also participated in the development of a machine learning model for assisting in the detection of retained foreign objects.
